Almost one year after a shooter opened fire at the LGBTQ+ nightclub Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado – killing five people and wounding 19 – the club has announced it is reopening.
But the new Club Q will look a little different. For one, it will have a different name, going by “The Q,” and it will also open in a new location, inside the Satellite Hotel in south Colorado Springs. A press release from the management team explained that many “feel returning the [original] building to the community this soon will hinder their healing process.”

“We believe the best way forward is for Club Q to initially open a new venue at a new location,” the statement continued, adding that the team hopes “this new space can provide community healing.”

The team said they “fully recognize that Club Q and this community has never been a building or location. It’s composed of tens of thousands of people of all walks of life coming together to celebrate love and acceptance.” It said reopening will send a message to the world “that hate will not win.”
The team vowed to be a safe space that will stand up to the attacks on the trans community sweeping the nation. What’s more, the release stated that “The Q will be managed and operated by survivors of the shooting.” Any former employees are also welcome to rejoin the team.
The statement also acknowledged the “frustrating delays” in establishing a permanent memorial at the original Club Q, but said that it is in the final approval process, and construction should begin soon.
The Club Q website details the plans for the memorial, which include five 12-foot pillars to represent each of the five people who were killed that day as well as 17 boulders to represent each person who was injured by gunfire. Additionally, the website said there will be “thousands of colorful mosaics” to “represent the tens of thousands of people who have been impacted by the horrific events that occurred on November 19th, 2022.”
