According to the FBI, a pedophilic sex cult is targeting LGBTQ+ youth around the world. And they learned about it through a seemingly banal arrest for a gun violation.

In November 2021, the bureau arrested 23-year-old Angel Almeida of Queens on gun charges, leading to the discovery of the worldwide sex and extortion cult that has victimized potentially hundreds of minors, in particular LGBTQ+ youth and young people of color, according to court records and sources with knowledge of the investigation.

Almeida’s detention led investigators to alarming social posts about the organization, known as 764, and a range of aliases, according to The Guardian.

In September, the FBI issued a public warning about the group, which is “deliberately targeting minor victims on publicly available messaging platforms to extort them into recording or livestreaming acts of self-harm and producing child sexual abuse material.”

New members use video evidence of sex acts and self-harm collected from victims as an initiation into the group.

The FBI says 764 appears to target children between the ages of eight and 17 who struggle with mental health issues as well. Group members cultivate ties with minors through platforms including games like Roblox and in Discord and Twitch chats, as well as curated playlists on streamer SoundCloud.

The group’s main form of communication is on Telegram, a popular choice among far-right extremists seeking anonymity.

The continually evolving group, variously known as 764, 676, CVLT, Court, Kaskar, Harm Nation, Leak Society, and H3ll, uses extortion and blackmail tactics like threatening to SWAT or DOX minor victims if they don’t comply with the groups’ demands, and then manipulates them into producing videos depicting sex acts, animal cruelty, and self-harm.

Victims have been coerced into cutting, stabbing, and “fan signing,” which involves writing or cutting specific numbers, letters, symbols, or names onto the body.

The groups control their victims through extreme fear, the FBI says.

Cult members threaten to share sexually explicit videos or photos of the minor victims with their family and friends or post them to the internet, and many members “have an end-goal of forcing the minors they extort into committing suicide on live-stream for their own entertainment or their own sense of fame.”

The Guardian reports that the group is an offshoot of the Order of Nine Angles, a Satanic, Hitler-worshipping U.K.-based cult that has been around since the 1960s. Its ideology has been connected with several deaths in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Russia, and Germany.

According to a detention memorandum filed by federal prosecutors in Almeida’s case, while searching his apartment in New York, investigators recovered a 9mm handgun, bandoliers of rifle ammunition, books pertaining to the extremist group Order of Nine Angles, and a flag bearing the insignia of an American O9A offshoot, the Tempel ov Blood.

Almeida was arrested in November 2021 following a tip that he “possessed firearms, was violent, and posted sexually explicit images of children online.”

In February this year, prosecutors added a superseding indictment for child pornography and child exploitation charges related to Almeida’s activities in 764 and hundreds of thousands of digital files recovered from four separate devices in his apartment. The new charges allege he coerced a teenage girl into having sex with an older man and convinced another to record herself cutting and send him the video.

Almeida is on his fourth court-appointed attorney since his arrest after repeated violent behavior while appearing in court, including an attack on a Justice Department staffer in the audience and his own court-appointed counsel on two separate occasions.
