Megan Thee Stallion reunited with a queer classmate who she defended while in school

Megan Thee Stallion was treated to an unexpected reunion with a queer classmate she once defended against homophobic bullying in middle school during her L.A. Pride in Park music festival set last Friday night.

When the rapper invited several fans to join her on stage, she was shocked and clearly overjoyed to see Carlos Ruvalcaba among them.

LGBTQ+ stars and straight allies alike took to social media to mark the start of Pride.

“B**ch, what is my classmate from like middle school—” the Grammy winner gushed as she embraced Ruvalcaba. “What the f**k are you doing here?!”

As Ruvalcaba, who also goes by Luis, later told the Houston Chronicle, he and Megan attended Thomas Middle School in Houston, Texas. “Her grandma was actually my counselor at the same school and an amazing human,” he said. “Megan didn’t fall far from the tree. She had the most radiant personality. I don’t remember anyone not liking her.”

Ruvalcaba said he traveled to L.A. from their hometown to celebrate his 28th birthday and see his old friend perform. He explained that he’d positioned himself near the front of the stage during the concert, knowing that Megan would bring fans onstage, but he wasn’t sure whether she would remember him.

“I looked at her and said, ‘Girl!’” Ruvalcaba told the paper. “She looked into my eyes and said, ‘Luis?’”

Ruvalcaba posted several videos from the show on his Instagram, including the moment when the “Hot Girl Summer” hitmaker recognized him. Megan later included the clip in her own Instagram stories.

“She’s still the same high energy person she was back then!!” Ruvalcaba wrote in the post’s caption. “I have so much respect for her since the time in middle school when I was being talked down being called Gay when I wasn’t out yet and she stepped in and defended me.”

In his interview with the Houston Chronicle, Ruvalcaba described the incident further. “The teacher wasn’t there, and a guy was making insulting jokes and calling me gay. I wasn’t even out yet,” he recalled. “I was trying to pretend it didn’t bother me. She stepped in and defended me. I just remember the class got quiet. I was a little boy back then, and she always had my back.”

In another clip from the L.A. Pride show, Megan gives Ruvalcaba a shout-out as he twerks along with other fans. He also posted video that Megan took of herself twerking onstage using his phone.

“It was a beautiful moment for me,” Ruvalcaba said of the experience. “It was iconic.”

“She came from the same place as me, and she’s gotten so far in life despite so many obstacles,” he said of the “WAP” singer, who has been an outspoken LGBTQ+ ally. Ruvalcaba said that he still sees the young woman who defended him against bullies in Megan Thee Stallion today. “That little girl that was once my friend still lives inside of her.”
