Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) celebrated Mother’s Day this year with a message attacking transgender people and trans allies.
“Wishing all the moms out there a beautiful Mother’s Day!” she wrote. “So many try to erase the impact of moms these days – calling us ‘birthing people’ and ‘people with uteruses’ – but we know the truth.”
“Ignore that noise and stay focused on what matters,” she said, despite the fact that she was randomly bringing up the language. “Have a wonderful day!”
The right has been angry about the expression “birthing person” ever since it appeared in a budget document in 2021, even going so far as to accuse people of saying it when they didn’t. Some people can be mothers without giving birth – like adoptive mothers – and some people who give birth but are not mothers – like many trans men and nonbinary people – and acknowledging these realities does not mean that people like Boebert can’t call themselves mothers.
On Twitter, people called Boebert out for using a day that is intended to celebrate mothers as a weapon against an oppressed minority. Others called her out for opposing abortion rights, even for minors, and for how her underage son and his underage girlfriend are expecting their first child.
