Marjorie Taylor Greene roasted for her recent stance against terrorism

On Sunday evening, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) tweeted that she plans to introduce a resolution on Tuesday to officially declare Antifa a terrorist organization.

In January, Greene declared that members of Antifa are the real fascists and should be charged with domestic terrorism in part because they support drag queens.

“They are not the anti-fascists,” Greene said during an interview with Tucker Carlson. “They are the fascists and they always show up and they defend Democrat causes. Not only do they attack police but they defend the drag queens targeting our children with drag queen story time.”

At the time, Greene said she would introduce a bill to designate anyone associated with Antifa as a domestic terrorist. Now she seems to have followed through after accusing Antifa of being behind attacks on a police training facility in Atlanta, despite seemingly no evidence.

In response, many on Twitter pointed out that Antifa – a left-wing anti-fascist movement – does not have a centralized organizational structure and that there are no defined leaders and no official membership. They also called out Greene for refusing to denounce far-right hate groups like the Proud Boys that are exceedingly more likely to perpetuate violence.

Antifa members see themselves as defenders of racial equality and LGBTQ+ rights and believe using violence is justified. But a 2020 explainer from the New York Times warned that the right has perpetuated a false equivalency between Antifa and right-wing extremists, who are more likely to utilize violence.

Armed Antifa members have shown up to counterprotest anti-LGBTQ+ extremists outside drag shows and other LGBTQ+ events.

In that same Tucker Carlson interview, Greene accused Democratic lawmakers of being in cahoots with Antifa members and blamed a riot in Atlanta on Antifa, though according to Newsweekthere was no proof Antifa members were involved.

In 2021, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) similarly attempted to have Antifa designated as a terrorist organization, though nothing came of it.
