Out Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said that he will not be running for an open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan next year.

Last month, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024. The 72-year-old four-term senator said that she wanted to spend more time with her family.

Buttigieg – who bought property in Michigan last year to be closer to his husband Chasten Buttigieg’s family – was one of several Democrats that people speculated may run for the open seat next year.

“Are you gonna be seeking that Senate seat?” CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Buttigieg yesterday.

“No,” Buttigieg responded concisely.

“I’m planning to vote in that election as a resident of Michigan, but look, the job that I have is, first of all, I think, the best job in the federal government.”

“This job is taking 110% of my time, and obviously I serve at the pleasure of the president.”But as long as he is willing to have me continue doing this work, I’m proud to be part of this team.”

Buttigieg shot down speculation that he would challenge President Joe Biden for the White House in 2024 in a separate interview last week.

“I don’t have any plans to do any job besides the one I’ve got. It’s taking 110% of my attention and energy,” Buttigieg told Punchbowl News.

“It’s a privilege to be doing the work,” he continued. “That’s what I’m going to be doing.”

A Granite State Poll last month found that Buttigieg is leading the possible 2024 presidential primary with 23% of likely Democratic voters in New Hampshire saying that they prefer him. Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) each got 18% and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) got 15%.
