Legendary queer rapper Da Brat announced this week that she is pregnant. The 48-year-old is expecting her first child with her wife, 41-year-old Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart, who also has three kids from a prior relationship.

Da Brat opened up to People about her journey to motherhood.

“I never thought I was going to have kids,” she said. “I just thought it wasn’t in the cards for me. I’ve had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”

But after meeting Harris-Dupart, everything changed. She said she “started looking at life so differently.”

“I was like, I want a little me with you. Something special from the both of us that we can share and raise and love unconditionally.”

But the road wasn’t easy. After the couple decided Da Brat would carry the pregnancy, she suffered a miscarriage.

“I had never been so excited about something that I didn’t even know I wanted,” she said. “I fell in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me.”

Now, at 18 weeks along, the rapper also spoke candidly about the process they used to get pregnant – using eggs from Harris-Dupart and a sperm donor. She also explained that before the embryo transfer procedure, she had to have surgery to have polyps and fibroids removed.

“It’s just a blessing. I’m excited!” she said.

And so are her fans.

While the couple’s social media posts announcing the pregnancy drew some of the expected anti-LGBTQ+ vitriol, many people were elated to see a Black queer couple in their 40s celebrating their growing family.

Da Brat also adorably revealed her pregnancy on Sherri Shepherd’s talk show, SHERRI.
