A mob of angry constituents from his New York district delivered a petition demanding out Rep. George Santos (R-NY) leave office yesterday. Instead of going out to meet the constituents himself, Santos sent out staffers who were surprised by the crowd.

Yesterday a group of constituents from New York’s Third Congressional District – the district Santos represents – traveled down to D.C. in protest of Santos lying about large parts of his life story in order to get elected to Congress.

First, they delivered a petition to Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS), the Republican co-chair of the bipartisan House Ethics Committee, demanding the removal of Santos from office.

“We are encouraging Rep. Guest as the leader of the Ethics Committee to make sure George Santos, our Congressperson, is properly investigated,” a representative of the group said. “We are really concerned about the lies. We are really concerned about his behavior. And we want a vote to expel him.”

Then they went to Santos’s office. Santos did not come out to greet them. Instead, two staffers met them at the door.

“Oh my God!” one of them shouted when seeing the crowd.

“Is this- is this the petition?” the other staffer asked the constituents.

Someone in the group identified them as Santos’s constituents: “We just want to make it clear… that we are not comfortable with the lies, the deceit, we want a vote to expel, we want him to respond to us.”

She explained that her group has tried to request a meeting with Santos but hasn’t gotten a response.

“As I told you outside, I’ll make sure this gets to the representative,” the staffer responded before closing the door.

Someone else in the crowd explained that they haven’t been able to get a meeting with their House member. “We came from New York CD3 to D.C. to speak with him and where is he? He won’t even speak to us out here.”

“He’s nowhere. This is not a representative.”

Since he was elected last November, Santos has been caught lying about much of his life story, including attending Baruch College and New York University and working for major financial firms like Goldman Sachs. He has been accused of a variety of crimes and misdeeds, including stealing expensive clothes and phones from former roommates and boyfriends, writing fraudulent checks in Brazil, sexually harassing a staffer in Congress, embezzling $3000 from a dog’s surgery fund resulting in the dog’s death, and various campaign finance rules violations.

Yesterday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) confirmed that Santos is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.
