Anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) compared gender-affirming care for youth to “abuse.”

“The abuse of our children MUST END,” the conspiracy theorist wrote on Twitter, alongside a link to an article from the conservative Washington Times saying that youth in the U.S. have more access to gender-affirming care than European youth.

“Stop the permanent genital mutilation of kids now!!” Greene added.

The study cited in the article Greene linked suggests the United States is too liberal in the access it gives children to gender-affirming health care. It was conducted by a far-right organization called Do No Harm, which describes itself as “a national association of medical professionals combating the attack on our healthcare system from woke activists” who are trying to “save medicine.”

The study compares the number of clinics providing gender-affirming care in the U.S. (it says over 300) to countries like Ireland and Norway, which it says only provide it at one hospital each. Both countries, however, have minuscule populations compared to the United States. There are 5.4 million people in Norway and 5 million in Ireland, compared to 331.9 million in the U.S.

On Twitter, people blasted Greene for retweeting the article, pointing out her ignorance and explaining what real child abuse looks like.

Greene has long been promoting hysteria around trans people and gender-affirming care. In August, she introduced a bill that would federally ban the lifesaving health care for minors.

Her bill would make it a class C felony to provide gender-affirming care for transgender minors, ban federal funds from being used for all such care (regardless of a patient’s age), ban medical schools from teaching such care, stop health care plans under the Affordable Care Act from funding gender-affirming care, and ban anyone who provided gender-affirming care from immigrating to the United States.

“It’s really genital mutilation, it’s puberty blockers that cause chemical castration, teenage girls actually having their breasts chopped off, teenage boys being castrated,” Greene told Fox News host Tucker Carlson a week before introducing her bill. “This needs to be illegal.”

Gender-affirming care has been shown to significantly reduce lifelong suicide risk among transgender people. The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, and other major medical/mental health organizations all support gender-affirming care for pubescent youth when appropriate.

Editor’s note: This article mentions suicide. If you need to talk to someone now, call the Trans Lifeline at 1-877-565-8860. It’s staffed by trans people, for trans people.
