Lauren Boebert makes transphobic joke about Russia invading Ukraine

Rep. Lauren Boebert decided to insult the actions President Joe Biden has taken in support of Ukraine by mocking transgender people. Meanwhile, she seems to have forgotten that she was mocking the idea of the U.S. defending Ukraine just last month.

“I pray someone in our country’s ‘leadership’ is more concerned about Putin than pronouns,” she tweeted. Since obviously people can care about both the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and transgender equality, the sitting U.S. Congresswoman’s joke appears just to be based on the idea that bringing up trans people at all is funny.

Boebert may be expressing concern for Ukraine in that joke, but that’s not exactly the position Boebert has taken in the past. Boebert was one of several Republican lawmakers described as either openly supportive of Russian strong man Vladimir Putin or who have expressed suspicion that Biden’s support for Ukraine is based on “nefarious intentions,” according to New York Times journalist Jonathan Weisman.

“Are we all just going to not bring up the $183,000 per month payments from Burisma to Hunter Biden as all this goes down with Ukraine right now?” Boebert tweeted in January, referring to the Ukrainian natural gas company, Burisma.

Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden was paid an unknown amount for his position on the company’s board – she just made up the $183,000 figure – and his work fueled rightwing conspiracy theories that Biden is siding with Ukraine because of his son’s work even though, as Vox reported, “the White House couldn’t literally force Hunter not to accept the job.”

In another tweet last month, she mocked Vice President Kamala Harris’s defense of Ukrainian independence comparing the looming invasion to peaceful immigration.

This month, Boebert criticized Harris for being concerned about Ukraine even though “Ukraine is not in America.”

In December 2020, she complained about foreign aide being sent to Ukraine. The reason Donald Trump was impeached the first time was because he threatened to withhold military aide from Ukraine.

Last year, she complained that Putin doesn’t like Biden that much.

And she praised Putin for working the media better than Biden.

Boebert also refers to Ukraine as “the Ukraine,” an expression that is generally used to show that Ukraine is a territory of Russia.

Boebert repeatedly called Russian interference in the 2016 elections the “Russian hoax” but insisted she wanted the media to cover Hunter Biden’s connections to Ukraine more.

On Twitter, people responded negatively to Boebert’s anti-transgender joke about Ukraine.
