A group of women who describe themselves as “radical feminists” is using the deadly collapse of Afghanistan as an opportunity to slur trans women online.

Transgender exclusionary radical feminists (TERFs) are motivated by their irrational opposition to the civil rights of transgender people. They regularly traffic in American religious right talking points and stalk the edges of social media spewing insults and vulgar insinuations.

“I bet TRAs [transgender rights advocates] are organising tourist tours to Afghanistan as we speak,” one British user tweeted. “Experiencing the most authentic female lifestyle.”

“Controversial question,” user Jean Hatchet tweeted. “When the Taliban force women to cover up how many men will want to identify as women? I’m curious. (I’m not really curious – I know)”

“And how many women identifying as men will be allowed to hop out of the burqa and climb up on the truck with the gun? Because… you’d almost think the issue is oppression because of sex. Now wouldn’t you?”

Another account, that touts itself as representing a group “amplifying the voices of women who have split or want to split from transitioning partners,” also used the deadly violence as an opportunity to slam “Middle Eastern crossdressers.”

“There was indeed a man who got off on being in a burkha,” one person replied without any sort of proof or point. Another claimed trans women are likely “role playing somewhere safe.”

“Oh I don’t doubt that at all,” Hatchet replied.

But while the women garnered support online from the usual crowd of trolls and right wingers, most simply pointed out how disgusting their comments were while the horror played out live on television from Kabul.

“You don’t have to see every event around the world as an opportunity to broadcast your transphobic feelings,” one person responded to Hatchet.

“It’s my opinion on how sex really matters and in this case the sex of women,” was Hatchet’s excuse in reply.

“I am so sorry you hate yourself so much that you need to post something like this,” another user replied. “Please talk to someone about it. Your life will get better.”

“Yes, the Taliban agrees with you that trans men are women,” Tom pointed out astutely. “Well done.”

American evangelicals, nicknamed the American Taliban for their desire to regulate away women and LGBTQ people’s civil rights, agrees with the TERFs as well. The two movements have worked together to oppose trans rights in multiple countries.
