How to debunk the religious right’s transgender scare tactics

Media Matters researcher Carlos Maza’s new video debunking all the myths about the “bathroom bills” sweeping across America lately is a must-see if you’re going to tackle the lies that the religious right have been peddling. While none of the states or cities who currently protect transgender people from discrimination have had any reports of sexual assault in bathrooms by men dressed as women, conservative fear-mongers are preying on one of women’s worst fears with devastating results for our community.

Even folks who normally express support for LGBTQ rights are buying into the specious arguments the religious right is pushing – because they don’t know the truth. Scare tactics are known to move public sentiment (see: same-sex marriage constitutional amendments or drug laws) and the only counter to lies is the truth. That’s where you come in.
