After Dylan Souster’s guests left a dinner party he hosted with his boyfriend, he went outside to make sure they had caught a cab. While his boyfriend, Darren Hedderman, crawled into bed, Souster was subjected to more than one physical attack according the The Sydney Herald – including a “Good Samaritan turned bad.”
Souster reportedly ran into a group of young adults outside of his home after checking on his friends.
“He walked up McEvoy Street a little bit and couldn’t see them [their guests], so he turned around,” Hedderman said. “As he turned around, somebody hit him, and the next thing he remembers is waking up in Waterloo Oval being kicked in the head. He doesn’t know how he got to the oval. We don’t know whether he was dragged there or whether he ran, he doesn’t remember.”
After finally escaping the group, Souster started working his way home and ran into a stranger who offered to help. Souster explained what happened and the man escorted him back to his home. When the stranger asked if he wanted to call his girlfriend to tell her what happened, Souster told the man he is gay.

“And he said ‘Oh you have a boyfriend, you’re a queer’, and he hit him in the face,” Hedderman said.
Souster suffered several facial injuries during the attack but is expected to make a full recovery. The second attacker was caught on police cameras but hasn’t been identified. The motivation for the first attack is still unknown.
