Michael “Mikey” Sam and pal Vito Cammisano have an important message for queer youth: they know what it’s like to have been bullied as kids and they got through it.

To commemorate GLAAD’s Spirit Day campaign, the guys filmed a video to help spread the word and encourage people to wear purple to show their support for bullied queer people.

“I support spirit day because it is very important,” Sam says. “As some one who was once bullied, I think its very important we tackle this issue.”

Cammisano adds: ” I support spirit day because I was bullied in middle school a lot and I never want any young person to feel like they can not be comfortable being who they are.”

So slip into something a little more purple, and watch the two men share their message below.
