New York education officials have issued guidance to school districts for accommodating transgender students.
The state Education Department says the document released Monday draws from real-life examples and addresses issues like the use of pronouns and students’ use of restrooms and changing rooms.
Officials say it’s intended to help districts foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students and comply with local, state, and federal laws covering bullying, harassment, discrimination and student privacy.
Empire State Pride Agenda is among groups praising the document. A spokesman says it’s been a struggle for students and schools to address the needs of transgender students without a clear, statewide policy.
