Bryn Mawr College to accept transgender, intersex students

BRYN MAWR, Pa. — A small women’s college near Philadelphia says it’ll start accepting transgender women and intersex applicants who don’t identify as male.

Bryn Mawr College announced the decision Monday after its board voted last week to expand and clarify its admissions policy.

The college says prospective students born as women who have taken medical or legal steps to identify as men won’t be eligible.

A working group started studying the admissions policy in September and gathered feedback from the college community and alumni.

Board Chair Arlene Gibson says the college recognizes conceptions of gender are changing.

The college says it’ll ask for additional documentation if an applicant’s gender isn’t clearly reflected in application materials.
