SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s family laws would reflect the legality of same-sex marriage under a bill headed to the governor’s desk.
A bill passed the state Assembly on Monday removes language from the family code that says marriage must be “between a man and a woman” and substitutes gender-neutral language throughout. The bill also would remove limits on recognizing out-of-state same-sex marriages.
Democratic Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco says his bill brings California law in line with court rulings allowing same-sex marriage to resume last year.
