FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A South Florida college student is asking an appellate court to recognize his same-sex marriage after he says he was denied in-state tuition.
Gildas Dousset filed an appeal in state court Wednesday, which alleges Florida’s laws barring recognition of valid out-of-state marriages of same-sex couples are unconstitutional.
Dousset is a student at Florida Atlantic University. He and his spouse legally married in Massachusetts in 2013. Dousset applied for in-state tuition as the spouse of a long-time Florida resident, but says he was turned down because the school refused to recognize his marriage.
The National Center for Lesbian Rights is handling Dousset’s case.

Doussett said in a statement, “I would like my marriage to be recognized just as other students’ marriages are.”
FAU officials did not immediately comment.
