Beating victim’s family members say attack was a hate crime

LOS ANGELES — A 22-year-old transgender woman suffered fractured ribs, a shattered cheekbone, and a broken jaw in an attack on Thursday night police are investigating as a hate crime, reported KCBS-TV.

Vivian Diego, 22, who works at Beso, the Hollywood restaurant owned by actress Eva Longoria, was jumped by a group of men who attacked her from behind, said her sister, Virginia Diego.

Her sister said the assailants kicked Diego in her temple, which will require surgery.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated from an earlier version to reflect Diego’s gender identity. In the original version of this article, LGBTQ Nation identified Diego by her birth name and male pronouns, based on the report by KCBS-TV and statements made by relatives. We updated this report after learning that Diego identifies as female.
