Ohio congressman says he disagrees with Portman’s support of gay marriage

MONTGOMERY, Ohio — A fellow Cincinnati area Republican says that while he respects Sen. Rob Portman, he disagrees with Portman’s new stand in support of gay marriage.

U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio)

U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot spoke Monday afternoon in suburban Montgomery to some 75 constituents during the first of two town halls in his district.

Chabot says he continues to support the Defense of Marriage Act, barring federal government recognition of same-sex marriage.

Portman recently announced his change in view, developed after son Will told his parents he was gay.

The younger Portman wrote about his decision to become public and his discussions with his father in a column Monday in the Yale Daily News. He praised hi father for being thoughtful and open minded, and for his willingness to take a political risk with his stand.
