New York police announce arrests in murder of gay man

NEW YORK — The New York Police Department says it has arrested two men in connection with the murder of a gay man earlier this year in his Queens apartment.

Police say Elijah Agyepong of the Bronx was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder.

Cecil Golden of the Bronx was arrested a day earlier and also charged with first-degree murder. He was additionally charged with criminal possession of stolen property.

The victim, David Rangel, 53, was found dead on Jan. 26. His body was discovered stuffed under his couch in his apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens.

An autopsy by the city medical examiner found that Rangel had been choked to death. Police said at the onset of the investigation that they believed Rangel may have met his assailant online.

Rangel taught Spanish to seventh and eighth graders at the Paul Klapper School in Flushing, N.Y.
