Urban Outfitters under fire for selling transphobic greeting card on website

Retailer Urban Outfitters has come under fire from many in the LGBT community for what advocates are calling a “transphobic” greeting card that was offered for sale on its website, but is now listed as sold out.

The “Ye Olde Jack and Jill” greeting card was spotted on Urban Outfitters’ United Kingdom website, and a screen shot has been circulated on the popular link-sharing website, Reddit.

The poem on the card reads:

“Jack and Jill, Went up the hill, So Jack could see Jill’s fanny, But Jack got a shock, And an eyeful of cock, Because Jill was a closet tranny.”

Urban Outfitters owns four other retail brands in addition to its namesake — Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN.

Its Chairman and Co-Founder, Richard Hayne, has been described as “a stanch conservative who donates money to Republican politicians,” including virulently anti-gay GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, according to a 2008 article published by the U.K.’s “This is Money.”

Urban Outfitters has not yet replied to a request for comment on the “Jack and Jill” greeting card, which is not listed for sale on its U.S. website.
