WASHINGTON — Pentagon officials have scheduled a meeting next Monday to start laying the groundwork for transgender troops to openly serve in the military, according to a Defense Department official.
USA Today reports that Defense Secretary Ash Carter sent a memo on Tuesday to top military brass and civilians, which delineates a plan for protecting transgender troops from being discharged. The goal is to have transgender troops added to the ranks within the next six months.
Key issues for the Pentagon to resolve include transgender housing, uniforms, medical treatment, and medical benefits.
