Montana High School Association shelves proposed policy for transgender athletes

BILLINGS, Mont. — The Montana High School Association is shelving a proposal to allow transgender student-athletes to compete on the team that matches their gender identity.

Mark Beckman, MHSA’s executive director, tells The Billings Gazette the decision to withdraw the proposal came after the four executive board members determined there is insufficient support among the association’s member schools.

The policy would have enabled Montana teens who were born male but identify as female to compete in girls’ events and would allow those who were born female but identify as male to compete in boys’ events.

The policy needed a two-third majority vote from representatives of the organization’s 179 public and private member schools.

It will no longer be voted on at the association’s annual meeting in Kalispell on Monday.
