Kerry speaks with Uganda president, says anti-gay law complicates U.S. ties

Friday, February 28, 2014

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has told Uganda’s president that the African nation’s new anti-gay law will complicate its relationship with America.

In a statement Friday, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Kerry also urged Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to ensure the safety of all of his citizens, including people who are gay, bisexual or transgender.

The two leaders spoke by phone on Thursday.

The statement said Kerry expressed deep disappointment over the law that punishes gay sex with up to life in prison. He said it will have a negative effect on public health efforts, tourism and foreign investment in Uganda.

Already, the World Bank has postponed a $90 million loan to Uganda for its health systems because of the law, which Museveni approved this week.

  16. Phor: there is such a thing as freedom of religion in the U.S. Some right wing extremists, masked with false oppressive religions, are the authors and masterminds of what is happening in Uganda. Fair minded American politicians are trying to restore justice in a country immersed in chaos. We should be thankful that Mr. Kerry is speaking out against the killing laws in Uganda.

  23. “Complicates” does not say it strong enough. It will impede it … it will end 100% financial aid from the U.S., etc. … clarity is required and our American dollars cannot go to animals like Uganda’s president.

  43. …complicates? ….an understatement this is …

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 4:30am
  44. Glad the US and the World Bank are leaning on Uganda to get a reality check: They can’t realistically address HIV/AIDS–with the many millions they expect and get from us–if they are forcing gay people into hiding. Next, I hope Kerry will lean on Nigeria for the same reason. And lean on our homegrown religionist bigots too, while they’re at it. They are the ones who spread this hatred to these African countries.

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 4:32am
  45. Complicates? What a wishy-washy asinine response to bigotry.

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 4:47am
  46. It complicates nothing. Tell them if they don’t repeal the law we will withhold 100% of our aid. Just like the UK just told them.

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 7:26am
  50. There is a difference between not legally being able to marry and the possibility of spending rest of life in prison. Yes US has work to do but to have relations with country that bans homosexuality and punishes with life in prison is INSANE.

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 10:40am
  54. first off there are many U.S. states that are anti gay so they cant talk but I agree that Uganda should stop the bigotry towards the Gay community its wrong. In saying that if this money is needed to keep people healthy and alive then isn’t that important too

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 12:41pm
  57. Unfortunately, Museveni doesn’t care what America thinks — he already said so. His thirst for “morality” had made him reckless. Ugandans, and not only the gay ones, will suffer for his choice.

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 12:45pm
  58. end all ties its not complicated

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:26pm
  59. Glad to see the United States say no to helping a country that kills and puts people in jail for life for hugs! Love should be celebrated not forced into the closet!!!

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:47pm
  60. There’s nothing “bigoted” about complications with the anti-gay law. If America doesn’t want to do business with Uganda then its because of the anti-gay law in the country.

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:59pm
  61. Idiot! It has nothing to do with U.S. relations, jerk! It has everything to do with “HUMAN RIGHTS”! What Uganda is doing is “WRONG”! PERIOD!

  62. Complicate – wot a twonk

Posted on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 3:00pm
  63. Well, Kerry is talking to the wrong people… He should be talking to the US Evangelists that are promoting this kind of laws in Uganda by basically “buying” them.
