Colo. governor signs bill allowing joint tax-filing for married same-sex couples

Thursday, February 27, 2014

DENVER — Colorado gay couples who are married in another state and in a civil union in Colorado can now file joint state tax returns.

Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.)

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a bill into law Thursday that requires gay couples in a civil union to file their Colorado taxes using the same filing status used on their federal tax return.

Democrats say the legislation is meant to align with updated federal tax law that permits joint filing for married gay couples.

Republicans argued the state measure undermines Colorado’s constitutional ban on gay marriage.

The law will apply to tax years beginning on Jan. 1, 2013.

The measure is Senate Bill 19.

  22. We live in Indiana and by law had to file as married for Federal and by law we have to lie. And file single for state. We have the privilege of paying $1000 more in Federal because of the marriage penalty. So the state thinks it is punishing us by not allowing us to file as married. What is wrong with this picture? The family values republicans are showing how much they value families by this fluke in the tax tables.

  24. Thanks for following what the Supreme Court and US Attorney General already said you had to do, Gov. Now how about sharing heterosexual privilege and “allowing joint” marriage?” Or will Colorado just stick with giving human rights to the “joint” that can make your state and businesses richer?
