Professor: Hormones, stress, smoking increases likelihood of children born gay

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

AMSTERDAM — A professor of neurobiology at Amsterdam University claims that factors ranging from taking synthetic hormones to suffering stress during pregnancy can increase the likelihood that a child will be born gay.

Dick Swaab

Dick Swaab

In his controversial new book, “We Are Our Brains,” Professor Dick Swaab says that drinking or taking drugs can lower a child’s IQ, and that smoking or taking synthetic hormones increases the likelihood of a girl being born lesbian or bisexual.

“Pre-birth exposure to nicotine or amphetamines also increases the likelihood of lesbian daughters,” he writes in the book.

“Pregnant woman suffering from stress are also more likely to give birth to homosexual children, because their raised levels of the stress hormone cortisol affect the production of fetal sex hormones.”

And Swaab claims, “The more older brothers a boy has, the greater the chance that he will be homosexual” because, he says, the mother’s immune system has a stronger response to male hormones with each son, thus increasing the chances of having a gay son.

Swaab asserts that sexuality is determined in the womb and cannot be changed regardless of lifestyle, the Daily Mail reported.

“Children brought up by lesbians aren’t more likely to be homosexual. Nor is there any evidence at all for the misconception that homosexuality is a ‘lifestyle choice,’” Swaab wrote.

Prominent British LGBT rights activist Peter Tatchell says Swaab’s conclusions are “a slap down for religious and political homophobes.”

“If being gay is mostly or wholly determined by biological factors prior to birth, it is immoral to condemn or discriminate against lesbians and gay men,” says Tatchell.

Swaab, 69, says his view that sexuality is decided in the womb demolishes the argument, often made by ultra-conservative groups, that gay people can be “cured.”

Swaab’s book does not focus entirely on homosexuality; his other controversial claims include the idea that annoying behavior in teenagers may be evolution’s way of preventing incest, and that difficult births may cause schizophrenia, autism and anorexia.

  10. Chris, there are better theses linking homo and transexuality to biological factors ,which I think are perfectly fine (and the most factual in my opinion) and will make fundamentalists to be beaten at a lot of their arguments- and they do not pathologize us ,as their detractors accuse them of - but this is not a good example of one such theses at all.

And I agree with you in one thing : people who deny the biological basis for hom and transexuality are just, though unwillingly, helping fundamentalists in their absurd notion that we can change who we are,as this jerk here : http://www.godandscience.org/evolution/genetics_of_homosexuality.html

  14. The article by Harvard I have a link for is not so good as it tends to not only stand on the wall but also opens a breach of reasoning in which pathologizing the condition would be the result of the confirmation of the biological basis ,which I don´t think is necessarily implict in the issue nor should be the case by truly wise scientists, though they support lgbt rights.

CAn you imagine the response in the scientific community if you could actually prove your theories. Now, let me tell you a bit more about what you didn’t postulate. The determinations of “sexuality” are far more complex than a few smokes and stress. The receptors in various areas of the brain determine how we respond to individuals. Some respond to opposite sex people, some to same sex people. As the maturation occurs the imprinting becomes far more permanent. If you doubt that ask a young man, who thinks he is gay, how he feels when he walks into a gym shower room!!!

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 3:38am
  82. Yes, whether we like his entire conclusion or not, he is making a strong argument to support what we all know, genetics are what bring us to being gay, not choice. However, he is making a case for environmental influence on development, and we do know that to be true. We could look at his hypothesis as a beginning. Because he is saying that stress and other factors can result in a gay child, does not mean that is a bad thing. It cannot be conclusive, because there are so many stressed pregnant women that if the stress alone was the deciding factor, we'd be the majority and "they'd" be the minority. That does not mean that he's a fool. He's looking for "non-choice" factors to explain sexual determination in the fetus. Perhaps, we shouldn't be quick to knee jerk, rather to consider carefully the complete implication of his work.

  90. I hope everyone is reading the article before commenting because the things he mentioned make it sound as if he is reducing it to something negative, but in fact, he is actually saying it is tied to hormone exposure in utero. Those things just happen to all be connected to testosterone levels… which of course are also connected to genes. He’s doing advocacy research but the title doesn’t make that very clear.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 3:39am
  91. Yes, exactly. So many negative comments here... because the title of this article makes it sound like he's "warning" parents... but he's actually supporting gay rights here. This is also not the first time I've heard the theory about males with many older brothers being more likely to be gay or bisexual. I've seen this theory posed before and the science behind it makes sense.

  94. Yes, I agree, Christina. I also don't like the knee-jerk reaction to this just because the research might show something that many "won't like". Maybe increased stress or tobacco intake *does* increase the likelihood of a child being born gay or bisexual. That's not some sort of smear. Maybe there's truth to it. What it DOES do is support the fact that we are born this way and it's not something we "chose". The least we can do is listen to the findings with an open mind and then judge for ourselves whether the findings are accurate or not.

I still think everyone is missing the PROBLEM with type of research: anyone who is investigating the causes of HOMOsexuality without investigating the causes of HETEROsexuality is still treating homosexuality as some type of deviation from a "norm." And it still misses the point about how DESIRE is formed, regardless of what happened while a mother was pregnant.

I feared him til he died. But then I was raped again by another man I trusted, a priest! My mother beat me til I raised my hand against her at the age of 10, and told her no more! I will never be like you mom. Or my parents that abused me when I was a child.
I see someone just touch a child or beat him or her, it makes me want to do the same against them. But what I said to my mom, I mean to this day, I will not be like her or my father ever!

  127. 1: There's been no legitimate studies done into this. As such, there's no proof, it's simply a theory. 2: If this were true, on -any- level, there would be a great many more children born gay. 3: While this theory does fall in line with the concept that those in the LGBT community are born this way (a concept I fully believe in), it also essentially turns being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, or genderqueer into a birth defect, a concept I can't support. There is some evidence that hormone exposure can help determine sexuality in utero(which I also support), but again, more research has to take place before it can be taken as fact. Until an actual, real study takes place that confirms the theories put forth by this doctor, I can't support it, aside from influence of hormone exposure, which, again, there is some evidence showing that is a factor, as during various points in the development of the fetus, the mother's body releases hormones in order to aid in proper development. Three times, in fact, in order to help with initial body structure, brain development, and secondary sex characteristics. However, there's evidence that irregularities in those releases are influenced by epigenetics, and not stress or something like smoking. As someone who is intersex, I've done a whole lot of reading on the subject. It's fascinating!

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 3:48am
  130. What a crock of fucking shit!!!!! First, smoking has gone WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY down in recent decades, if smoking caused homosexuality, then EVERY child would have been born gay in the 40s, 50s, and 60s!

Second, stress is something that EVERY SINGLE PERSON EXPERIENCES!! If that caused homosexuality, then EVERY child would have been gay THROUGHOUT ALL OF HUMAN HISOTRY!

Third, which hormones? Considering the fact that hormones are defined as what every single set of genes makes, which means that, once again, every child would have been born gay throughout all of human history!!

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 3:48am
  131. Hes correct about the older brothers thing, but not why. I watched a documentary on it once.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 3:48am
  132. THOUGH this IS very true!:And Swaab claims, “The more older brothers a boy has, the greater the chance that he will be homosexual” because, he says, the mother’s immune system has a stronger response to male hormones with each son, thus increasing the chances of having a gay son.

Swaab asserts that sexuality is determined in the womb and cannot be changed regardless of lifestyle.

  149. Please, people, I beg you, read the article before denouncing the researcher*:

Prominent British LGBT rights activist Peter Tatchell says Swaab’s conclusions are “a slap down for religious and political homophobes.”
“If being gay is mostly or wholly determined by biological factors prior to birth, it is immoral to condemn or discriminate against lesbians and gay men,” says Tatchell.

Swaab, 69, says his view that sexuality is decided in the womb demolishes the argument, often made by ultra-conservative groups, that gay people can be “cured.”

*Also note that the conclusions drawn neither apply to us specifically nor set us back in any way.

Replied on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 6:07am
  152. Certainly not to demean us (see the quote above). Also, the confirmed number of species is far from 1500, but far beyond convincing. This research discounts those species in no way, from everything I've read so far.

  156. so many ignorant comments. I see nothing wrong with his theories. He’s backing up the fact that it’s not in our control, that other factors contribute and it’s very complicated. And he’s not the first. It’s not purely genetic or identical twins would always be the same sexuality. It’s lots of factors contributing to how our genes are expressed and how our brains developed.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 3:56am
  157. It may be convenient to agree with him just to shut up those “it’s a lifestyle choice” creeps – but I don’t see proof here or an explanation of why there’s so much variability.

  159. We need further studies. Becoz my parents did not take growth synthetic hormones etc. but stressed? I dont know, anyone can have stress at anytime. And that also is very suspicious. I think sooo many pregnant mothers have a certain kind of stress during pregnancy. So either his study, his books or this article is too shallow or there are needs for further studies.
But let us keep open minded. I am not in a position to condemn a theory in science. It doesnt matter to me.
And this theory can not be used as a justification for discrimination or for reckless gay cure therapy.

Replied on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 5:08am
  178. Actually no I did not read the entire article until just now and perhaps I should have. I do think lumping contributing factors of stress and smoking lessens his argument for predisposition of sexuality. It opens a door for right wing fanatics to say it is the fault of the mothers and that society should not pay for their mistakes in the way of acceptance for the GLB community. I also don't really think you have a right to call others out on whether they read an article or not. As a human I am just as likely to jump at a heading that takes away from my held beliefs. As we are strangers it is best for fluidity of conversation and peace not to be antagonist as you were with your response..............you don't know me or anything about me and have no intelligent right to presume my opinion predicts my actions or lack there of.

  179. How do I not have a right to point out that you commented on an article without reading it? The man is in SUPPORT of gay rights, not against it. You jumped on the title of an article without reading the substance of the article. I wasn't being antagonistic. I was getting you to THINK about your stance before you open your mouth (er... keyboard). The professor doesn't have a political agenda here, he's just following his scientific findings. The least we can do is listen with an open mind. If his findings stand up, then it proves that homosexuality is something we are born with, not something we choose.

  255. Wait a minuet, I thought people like this refused to acknowledge the genetics of homosexuality. Now that repairative therapy has be debunked they want to jump on the genetic bandwagon are try curing us that way. WHAT A FUCKING JOKE. Sad thing is that this loser probably got paid more for this study than I make actually working.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 5:52am
  261. He is right..um gay myself. .and I read so many articles snd studies say the same thing..they never said that stress and prenatal hormones are the only reasons for being homosexual or bisexual..there is no exclusive causation. .but stress and smoking increase the chance to be homosexual. .the problem is that some religious writers and websites use it to prove that homosexuality is a defect…can be cured in the future by more developed pregnancy test…but they ignore that factors like genotype and genes play an important role also..in addition to this hypothesis which says that sexual orientation is spectrum and fluid..any way even if homosexuality can be caused by prenatal hormones. .wt is the wrong to have homosexual or bisexual son..its like changing of eye colors..not big deal

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 5:53am
  262. Don’t smoke … ain’t stressed … three out of my four daughters are gay … Go figure !

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 5:53am
  263. it is not illogical to assume that since being gay is genetic (at least according to the predominant theory on this page and the theory that i believe), things that a mother does before the child is born can influence the presence of said gene. just because something can be caused (or have the odds of it increased) by something that happens before birth does not mean that it has to be negative. think of it in the same category as saying that exercise while pregnant can make your baby stronger, smarter, and increase its likelihood of survival.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 5:54am

If you are blessed with healthy children, gay or not, then damn, just love them… Quit trying to figure out if it was the blue or red pill that made them that way.

  280. I’m Dutch (as is the professor) and I know this man. I have read his book (“We are our brain”) and it’s really good. He is a really passionate guy who loves science.
I’m really dissapointed in some comments here. Some people clearly did not read the article and some people clearly jump to conclusions because they don’t seem to understand what he’s saying.
Let’s remember that science doesn’t excist to proof or debunk things. (although it can be the result of research) The goal of science is to find out how things work regardless of the outcome.
And this man is doing just that. He is not anti-gay (quite the opposite in fact) and all he says it increases the likelihood.
Some reactions remind me of the smoking argument. When you say that smoking shortens your life, they suddenly have aunts and grandfathers who lived to be 120 while smoking like a chimney.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 7:12am
  281. Interesting. Evolution sees it advantageous for a “stressed” environment to favor homosexuality. …is this lost on us!? Evolution Wants gay human beings TO RULE…it is a GIFT to humanity.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 8:17am
  292. I cannot understand why this man and other educated people think of same sex attraction as an oddity instead of as a complexity. This man is doing this research based on the assumption opposite sex attraction is a norm. That isn’t the best way to go about understanding human sexual development, we are way more complex than that. Plus this opens a logical defect: if smoking, drugs and stress increases the likelihood of same sex attracted children, then what causes opposite sex attraction? How do you explain the children of healthy prenatal environments without neither attraction?

To suggest certain prenatal environmental triggers increase the likelihood of same sex attraction seems to belittle the other enviromental and developmental factors outside of the womb and throughout life that may give a more complete understanding of human sexuality as a whole, both same sex attraction and opposite sex attraction.

In layman’s terms: Go back to the drawing board Doc!

What makes me more upset is that people will read this article and use his analysis as scientific fact that homosexuality can be “diminished” or avoided in some way.

  363. I really am sick and tired of people trying to find out the “essential” causes of homosexuality. It always seems to be something negative (e.g., smoking while pregnant). WHY IS NO ONE INVESTIGATING THE CAUSES OF HETEROSEXUALITY? If there were any researchers trying to discover why EVERYONE isn’t automatically gay or lesbian, then I’d find this research of value. As it is, this type of junk science still treats homosexuality as some type of unfortunate result or defect. Enough already.

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 2:56pm
  372. Exactly Herbert Brant, both a scientist and psychiatric are suppose to be non-biased when doing any kind of research. Theories are okay to have, but closing your mind like that to assuming it’s a bad thing, as a teacher he should understand how it affects people ( lowers self esteem and become offended) when he says what he does about homosexuals. So I assume he’s just doesn’t care about other people’s feelings. People are still people, and your sexual does not determine if you’re a good or bad one. A person, is still a person.

His research isn’t even legitimate. Go learn about the Limbic System and Sigmund Freud’s theory of childhood development first, then come back to us, Professor Asshole.
