U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz: Pray to stop the ‘assault on marriage’

BRIAN TASHMAN | Right Wing Watch
Sunday, July 28, 2013

The Christian Broadcasting Network has released more footage from the recent Religious Right summit in Iowa organized by David Lane and featuring speakers like U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Cruz, who told CBN in an interview that gay rights advocates intend to dispose of the First Amendment and pass hate speech laws, won plaudits from the audience of conservative activists for his attacks on gay rights advocates and “judicial activism.”

“On marriage there is no issue in which we need to be more on our knees because the momentum is with the opponents of traditional marriage,” Cruz said. “We’re facing an assault on marriage.”

He scolded “unelected judges” who think “we know better” on marriage, and urged pastors to “to speak to your congregations and to mobilize the people, and mobilize them more than anything to pray.”

Watch:

Here’s the transcript:

On marriage there is no issue in which we need to be more on our knees because the momentum is with the opponents of traditional marriage. We saw a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court, a decision that some have herald, even some conservatives have herald, I think that decision was an abject demonstration of judicial activism. Five unelected judges saying we are going to set aside the policy preference of the state of California, the citizens not of some crazy right-wing state—California.

The citizens of California went to vote and they voted and said in the state of California we want marriage to be the traditional union of one man and one woman, and the US Supreme Court, as a result of its decision said you have no right to define marriage in your state, we know better. We’re facing an assault on marriage. As pastors, each of you has a special responsibility and a special ability to speak to your congregations and to mobilize the people, and mobilize them more than anything to pray.

  11. He is right….there is an assault on marriage…..in my state of Iowa where this summit was held, my marriage to my wife is legal. The fact that he participated in a summit to deny our legal rights as a lawful married couple was an assault on marriage. Go to another state and perpetuate that….better yet…get over it and move on.

  24. The biggest issues with comments like this is that the general public who voted for Prop 8 don´t know the difference between holy matrimony and civil marriage. I believe that most people think that Civil Marriage is the same as Holy Matrimony, I know most from the LGBT community don´t want to change Holy Matrimony but instead civil marriage.

  26. Hey idiot Ted.. you´re about a hundred years (or more) too late. Last I saw the union of marriage is a joke due to divorce, bastard children, and domestic abusive relationships. Work on those first then we´ll think about tacking the issue of two loving people sharing their love of each other with the world at larage and providing a happy, healthy environment for children and close social relationships with friends/co-workers, etc.

  54. I have written to Senator paul regarding his stance on LGBT equality. I can´t see how a true libertarian could possibly be against marriage equality. If he is, than he has broken away from the libertarianism that has made him famous & his father great. I have supported Rand Paul, but if I find that he would indeed work to undermine the progress our community has made, then I can no longer support him.

  72. Just suck it, Cruz..you and your RePUKElican hate-mongers

Posted on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 1:44am
  73. The trouble with people like Cruz, is that you can´t reason with them. They´ll ignore all reason and logic because it doesn´t support how they feel. You can try to point out that the institution of marriage existed long before Christianity came around, and started as a legal contract before it gained religious meaning, but they won´t listen. The idea of two men or two women getting married makes them uncomfortable, and they´ll use religion as an excuse for their own feelings. We can hope, pray if you will, that someday they´ll see the error of their ways. Until then, I guess we just have to keep making sure our voices are heard. I ALMOST feel bad for this guy… he´s so misguided. Hardly what I´d call a real christian.

Posted on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 4:18am
  82. I´m thinking if we all pray hard enough, guys like these will all suffer some sort of affliction in which they can no longer spew their stupid crap. That would also end the “Assault on Marriage” since they will all just stfu.

  89. How about we pray to end this idiot´s assault on the Judicial Branch? He certainly won´t bitch and complain when “five unelected judges” decide in favor of any issues that he supports. But when the justices decide in favor of an issue he doesn´t like, the Supreme Court justices are apparently the bad guys.

  91. If straight marriage was doing so great, people wouldn´t need divorce. Everyone would be happy. I think we should end divorce. I figure that would help strength the bonds in marriages. It would also prevent people from getting quick marriages that only last day or so. I still like know how gay marriage is assault on straight marriages. If both people in a straight marriage are happy, how can a gay couple being married make any difference? I´m married, and I don´t see a gay couple being married going to hurt my marriage. Invalid argument. imo

Posted on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 9:55am
  92. I think we should encourage the religious zealots to pray to stop it. Go ahead! Fill your boots! Stay on your fucking knees in a church all day while the rest of us enact the reforms we desperately need with little to no impediment from you jizzwaffles. I´m predicting a distinct lack of thunderbolts.
