Boy Scout councils weigh options as fallout continues over repeal of gay ban

Pastor: 'We cannot be distracted from the mission God has called us to'
Tuesday, May 28, 2013

DALLAS — Fallout continues after the Boy Scouts of America voted last week to open its ranks to openly gay youth.

In Idaho, Sheriff Ben Wolfinger of Kootenai County, said that he feels mandated to drop his department’s sponsorship of a Boy Scouts of America charter because the organization is promoting a lifestyle that is against state law.

“It would be inappropriate for the sheriff’s office to sponsor an organization that is promoting a lifestyle that is in violation of state law,” Wolfinger said, stressing that sodomy is against the law in Idaho.

Tim McCandless, the senior ranking member and Director of the Inland Northwest BSA Council, encouraged Wolfinger “to read the resolution that was passed,” but added, “Sodomy is not allowed in scouting and is not an issue in this discussion.”

In Louisville, Ky., a local church wants nothing to do with BSA troops that accept gay kids.

Boy Scout Troop 212 and Cub Scout Pack 212, from Louisville are looking for a new home. Southeast Christian Church, the megachurch that held the troops’ charter, is breaking ties with the youth organization following the Scouts’ national council vote last week to accept gay members.

Executive pastor Tim Hester said the new policy on gay members was the “catalyst” for, though not the only factor in, the church’s decision. The troops, in which 300 families participate, have until the end of the year to find a new sponsor.

“We cannot be distracted from the mission God has called us to,” Hester said. “We want everyone, including ourselves, to live by biblical standards.”

At its National Council’s annual meeting in suburban Dallas last week, the Boy Scouts of America adopted a resolution “to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone.”

The policy change will take effect January 1.

And while the National Council said the ban on openly gay adult leaders is still in effect, Wolfinger points to media reports that indicate that the Boy Scouts will eventually lift that ban as well.

“It’s in USA Today, this just opens the door to having openly gay scout leaders,” he added.

The Boy Scouts’ chief executive, Wayne Brock, has pleaded for the Scouting community to reunite after the divisive debate that led to last Thursday’s vote. However, Brock’s plea failed to sway some conservative religious leaders whose denominations sponsor many Scout units and who consider same-sex relationships immoral.

“Frankly, I can’t imagine a Southern Baptist pastor who would continue to allow his church to sponsor a Boy Scout troop under these new rules,” Richard Land, a senior Southern Baptist Conference official, told the SBC’s news agency, Baptist Press.

  1. The BSA decision may be clear but still discriminatory at the end of the day. I read it as, you can have “youthful indiscretions” ( code for be gay) and we’ll support that while you are a scout but, there is no place in our organization for individuals who have proven that they can positively influence the lives of boys and young men if they are members of the LGBT community and out of the closet. Its a shame that there are members of the LGBT community that are scoutmasters that have to remain in the closet and defy the so-called moral compass scouting is trying to stand this decision on. I would rather have my child guided by someone that is not afraid to be themselves than someone acting a facade’ to be accepted. I think that should be food for thought for the higher powers that be in scouting…but who am I?????

  2. This makes me so fucking angry. There is no law that says you cannot be gay. Denying a sponsorship to a group because they try to be equal to all sexual orientations is breaking a law. The church can also suck my dick because God does not even exist ; if God did exist than he would love everybody.

  3. If the anti gay folk wanna bitch about “gays molesting their kids”or”let the sodomy begin”then list the Boy Scouts as a hate group. Cut their funding and tax cuts from the government.

  4. Shame really. Equality is happening yet people are pissed about it. What the freak?! Religion pisses me off everyday. They should be cheering I the BSA for showing support for all kids eager to join the Scouts

  5. Then they can do as they please. Go back to the anti gay anti Hispanic anti minority “traditional values” like they wanted.

  7. It is so unfortunate that this is the message that these churches want to send. A message of exclusion and “you’re not good enough”… I hope that the BSA survives this, I would hate to see such an amazing organization fall apart over something that really shouldn’t be this big of a deal.

  8. Didn’t they also vote to keep Gay people from being counsellors? Seems like a mixed message from a totally backwards org.

  9. Actually, as a result of Lawrence v Texas, Lawrence v. Texas, sodomy is not illegal in Idaho. We merely need to remind the sheriff about this landmark Supreme Court decision. [539 U.S. 558 (2003),[1] is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court. In the 6–3 ruling, the Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in thirteen other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal in every U.S. state and territory. The Court overturned its previous ruling on the same issue in the 1986 case Bowers v. Hardwick, where it upheld a challenged Georgia statute and did not find a constitutional protection of sexual privacy.] This sheriff needs to understand that this SCOTUS decision invalidated the Idaho laws against sodomy. Those laws may be on the books but they are no longer valid or enforceable.

  10. Sara, would you identify yourself as a heterosexual woman? No one is saying that we want boy scouts to be having sex with each other all we’re saying is that the Boy Scouts shouldn’t be able to tell one boy he isn’t good enough because of his attraction to other boys. Notice I didn’t say because he sleeps with other boys. You ma’am are the only one making anything about sex. Being homosexual does not automatically mean that you are some promiscuous heathen, your attraction to the same sex makes you gay not the actual sex act.

  12. What really upsets me is that these religious people are not the ones affected by the hate or prejudice they are putting out but yet they are claiming to be the victims and in reality the real victims are the ones just trying to be themselves in honest fashion. I believe in GOD but I don’t consider myself religious because of the hate and bigotry that goes on in most churches and I don’t want any part of that kind of community. To me that is unholy and misrepresents what GOD is all about. That is also how I feel about most of the parents of Boy Scouts, they would rather have their children lie about who they really are and hide away what would shame their families. In other words they are encouraging lying and dishonesty! Shameful parents and organizations who also practice this outdated values!!

  13. To hell with those bigoted officials who renounce the BSA and their decision. It is a great organization that is progressing with the rest of the country and world in changing for the better. The BSA still has a way to go. Continue to show strength in spite of the religious right. Other organizations will step in and show love and support for these disenfranchised troops.

  14. This is a HUGE deal! It is a human rights deal!!!! I personally hope they fall apart if they continue to follow this discrimination in their organization! This is counter to teaching boys to be well rounded, with high self esteem & seeing all as equal.

  15. So sodomy is against the law in Idaho… And the Sheriff doesn’t want to break the law… So, he doesn’t like getting head?…

Posted on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 5:19pm
  16. Ummmmm you misunderstood me. I support allowing gays in the scouts, I’m gay myself and I was also a boy scout. I’m saying that in todays day and age we should be at the point where someone’s sexuality doesn’t matter anymore, we should be at the point where it’s a non issue.

Posted on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 5:20pm
  17. Actually Jason several states still have sodomy laws on the books, it doesn’t mean that they are enforced but they do exist even in direct defiance of the Supreme Court.

Posted on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 5:22pm
  18. Like I said before YOU are making this about sex, being gay doesn’t equal “sex, sex, sex” Your attraction to men doesn’t automatically mean you want to have sex with them does it?

  19. Get a grip and realize WE’RE PEOPLE TOO

  28. The only reason they are going to change their minds is because they were going to lose their funding as a non- profit group. I’m gay too. Finally realized it wasn’t going to go away by the age of 16. Of course it wasn’t based on sex. Had nothing to do with sex. And Sara you don’t know anything. Who chooses this. Not many. Very proud to be a lesbian these days though. But very traumatic for youngsters who need support.

Posted on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 6:27pm
  30. And Sarah, I do not identify myself by my sexuality ma’mm…I just think its kind of stupid to think heterosexuals have moral authority than anyone else. It seems that YOU are defining this by sexuality…not me or anyone else responding to you with your cavalier attitude.

Posted on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 6:35pm
  31. Actually scientists have made pretty great strides and your info is off Sara. Homosexuality affects between 8%-15% and the theory that most scientists agree on is that homosexuality is a congenital condition, much like being left handed. The process thought to cause homosexuality is too little testosterone too late during the Defeminization process. This lack of testosterone at certain periods causes disturbances in the hypothalamus.

  32. Plus there are way too many coincidences for homosexuality to be of a social nature. Such as in homosexual men their index finger is on average shorter than their ring finger (which also gives credit to the above statement), every older sibling one has increases the youngest’s chances of being homosexual, also homosexuality is found at the same frequency throughout the population (this may give credence to the idea that homosexuality is evolutions way of population control).

  35. *Yawn* The same tired two or three examples in different states do not a “continuing fallout” make. Stop beating a dead horse, conservatives and open your eyes to the hundreds and thousands of young boys who will be helped by this new policy.

  46. It is shocking how retarded the new policy is, in allowing gay youth, oh but ban them when older for being gay. Double messages only cause more damage, especially making people think older gay guys are not trust worthy around youth, when statistically the most dangerous ones are not gay. I see this as an empty attempt to openly attack the LGBTQ community, because that IS exactly what it IS
