SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) – A New Mexico House committee has shelved a proposal to allow voters to decide whether to legalize same-sex marriage.
The Voters and Elections Committee voted 7-to-4 on Thursday to block a constitutional amendment proposed by Democratic Rep. Brian Egolf of Santa Fe.
Two Democrats – Debbie Rodella of Espanola and committee chairwoman Mary Helen Garcia of Las Cruces – joined Republicans in opposing the measure, which would have placed the gay marriage question on the 2014 general election ballot.
Egolf told the panel, “It’s a shame that people have to come to the Legislature and ask for permission under the law to be treated equally.”
Former Democratic Attorney General Patricia Madrid issued an advisory letter in 2004, saying state law limits marriage to a man and a woman.

COLORADO lets get on this please!
While it’s completely rediculous that voters get to vote on our right to marry to begin with, the fact that these cowards (and yes-even the Democratic ones) don’t have the inclination to even ALLOW a ballot question is simply pathetic. What are they so afraid of!?
SMFH.
I’m from New Mexico. People get their tails taped between their legs up in Santa Fe because of who it might offend.
It offends me that gay marriage is only offered in 9 states. I’m PROUD that I live in one of those states <3
They are reporting facts, and the fact is, it is a bill to legalize SAME SEX marriage, not MARRIAGE FOR ADULTS.
It’s called Marriage Equality, where all citizens of consenting age in this country are treated equally under the law regarding marriage.
No surprises here. This is why we need a federal mandate and stop the bigotry on the state level.
Yes, Kevin, we in Colorado need to work hard to overturn Amendment 43, and have the upcoming civil unions bill “ugraded” to marriage equality.
Not surprised. Republican controlled state.
