NFL’s Chris Kluwe to anti-gay lawmaker: ‘Holy fucking shitballs. Did you seriously just say that?’

Friday, September 7, 2012

Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe on Friday entered the controversy surrounding a Maryland lawmaker’s attempts to stifle Baltimore Ravens’ linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo’s support for marriage equality.

Ayanbadejo was targeted last week by Maryland General Assembly Delegate Emmett C. Burns, who sent a letter to Raven’s owner Steve BisciottIn his letter, denouncing Ayanbadejo’s support of same-sex marriage.

In his letter, Burns said the Ravens should “take the necessary action … to inhibit such expressions from your employees.”

Chris Kluwe

Now, in an open letter published on Deadspin, Kluwe — also a supporter of marriage equality who has done several campaign ads for Minnesotans for Equality — had his own harsh words for Burns, calling hims an “Asshole,” and his comments a “colossal foot in mouth clusterfuck.”

“I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland’s state government. Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level.

[...]

By using your position as an elected official (when referring to your constituents so as to implicitly threaten the Ravens organization) to state that the Ravens should “inhibit such expressions from your employees,” more specifically Brendon Ayanbadejo, not only are you clearly violating the First Amendment, you also come across as a narcissistic fromunda stain. What on earth would possess you to be so mind-boggingly stupid?

[...]

“Many of your fans are opposed to such a view and feel it has no place in a sport that is strictly for pride, entertainment, and excitement.” Holy fucking shitballs. Did you seriously just say that, as someone who’s “deeply involved in government task forces on the legacy of slavery in Maryland”?

[...]

I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won’t even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population…

The full text of Kluwe’s letter is at Deadspin.com.

In an interview with Outsports.com earlier this year, Kluwe said, “I’ve always believed that people are inherently the same and should have the same rights and equal protection under the law. It really doesn’t matter what you do with who or whom as long as you’re not infringing on someone else’s rights. Everyone should be free to live their own life however it makes them happy.”

Voters in both Minnesota and Maryland will consider ballot initiatives in November relating to marriage equality.

The Minnesota measure asks voters to approve a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage; the Maryland initiative asks voters to approve or reject the state’s recently passed marriage equality law.

  3. I hope if you are as outraged as I am you will join me in emailing Mr. Emmett C Burns, Jr. at emmett.burns@house.state.md.us and the Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, Mr. Michael E. Busch at michael.busch@house.state.md.us in protest of his abuse of office. Mr. Emmett C. Burns, Jr.’s views are his and he has the right to express them. He does not have the right to use his office in an attempt to threaten a citizen’s employment to silence them.

  4. Bless you, Chris. You are much holier than that black minister who wrote the Raven’s owner a letter. Yes, that fine man is not only an elected Maryland legislator but a man of the cloth. Figures. More hate spews from religious bigots than anyone else.

  19. Dani, it’s clear that the senator doesn’t even consider your point as valid since he is demanding the violation if the first amendment to his constituency, do you think he is worried about the language? He hasn’t even considered that if I have to speculate, either way don’t criticize someone who supports the rights for all people even if you don’t agree with their tact. He is obviously passionate about this subject and I personally want more people like him around thank you very much!

  23. Power to him for speaking up for us. But he could have approached it very differently.

  25. I criticize people who suppress, alienate, isolate and bully. The fact the this person is an African-American and is so hypocritical is an abomination to the fact that he probably matched with Martin Luther King to establish the very freedom for himself that he is so comfortable to deny to other. I am over being nice to racist, bigoted right wing facists. I am curious about his position on women’s rights. Would that excuse foul language if it’s not in line with another woman’s view?

I’m glad that you guys look up to a guy that uses ignorant slang and foul language to try and prove a point. But it doesn’t. The only people that it will effect is you guys. It wont change minds and it wont change hearts. Its just makes lgbt and allies look uneducated and rash.

  57. Right because me typing from a mobile device and posting on a thread requires me to spell check my grammar? Excuse me. Ill be sure to fix that for you next time so you can take my otherwise sound argument more seriously. That comment was asinine and was really just to defer attention from what I said to bagging on me instead. Also asinine. Id be more worried about the fact that I misspelled hypocrisy if anything but you know. That’s just me. As if that has anything to do with the subject at hand.

XOXO Big homo; allowed to be homo; and allowed to marry -bc it really affects you- lol- up here in Canada; where it is okay to be human and free & not ok to be a biggot or hateful
