Perkins: Americans will never accept gay marriage because it ‘violates reason, natural law’

Recently, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins and Maryland Bishop Harry Jackson sat down for a half-hour interview with CBN’s David Brody to discuss President Obama’s support for marriage equality and what it will mean for the 2012 election.

Brody has posted the entire interview on his blog, in which Perkins compared the issue of gay marriage to the issue of abortion, declaring that Americans will never accept the legitimacy of gay marriage, regardless of what the courts rule, because “same-sex marriage violates reason and natural law” and warning that any Supreme Court ruling upholding the legality of gay marriage will “create great unrest in this society”

For his part, Jackson saw the President’s statement as an opportunity to create a new “Black-Brown coalition” among African Americans and Hispanics rooted in opposition to the Democratic Party’s growing support for gay rights and fueled by resentment against gay activists who are trying to push minorities to the back of the line.

Jackson said comparisons between the push for gay rights and the struggle for civil rights are nonsense because systematic discrimination and violence against the gay community “never happened” and warned that if African Americans and Hispanics don’t escape the “Democratic Party plantation,” then “America’s best days are over”:

  3. i think americans will never accept complete an utter hypocrisy that represents “christian people”. if you are going to condemn a group of people because you say it violates what your bible says, then live by all the other outdated things it says, like not eating shellfish, or wearing two types of cloth, etc…. pick and choose morality is not christian….

  4. Why is it so easy to picture Tony giving it hard to Harry?

  5. Just like Americans will never embrace interracial marriage or equal rights for all races and women.

    *sarcasm*

  6. But Americans accept divorce and double life and cheat wifes. Americans accept that their kids learn about what is a divorce and how painful is for a kid that always want to see daddy and mommy together. Americans accept that kids learn see that daddy betrays mommy for another woman or go to a bar to get a bitch.. right Perkins?

  7. Who cares what other people accept it’s none of their business.

  8. Their opinion of “Americans” is really low.

  9. Why are these self-righteous bigots even given national media attention? So they can feel powerful and superior, and have an elevated status in their own congregations and businesses. If the are so insecure about their own masculinity and marriages, they need to seek professional help. Says more about them than the GLBT community.

  10. Ms. Perkins is unacceptable because of his addiction to a political Jesus.

  11. And it violates ‘reason’ and ‘natural law’ how exactly? You can throw as many buzz words out there as possible, but unless you can actually back up your claim, you’re just a buffoon.

  14. I think he better check his facts as the majority of Americans already accept gay marriage. He and his bigot friends are fast becoming the minority.

  17. He can’t be a happy person inside if the only thing he does is go around saying things like that about other people just because you don’t agree with them.

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:33pm
  18. I’m pretty sure all Americans would not agree.

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:36pm
  19. he has no idea what hes talking about theres lots of people willing to accept it and everything

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:36pm
  20. Sorry, Tony. The only thing here that violates reason is you.

  21. Trying to avoid looking old by dying your gray hair, or using anti-wrinkle creams violates natural law. Wanting to marry someone you love does not.

  22. Idiots…get with the times! We are the Age of Aquarius! Freedom to be different, respect for science, humanitarianism ! It has been scientifically shown that gayness is natural, even genetic. If you believe in God, well God created gayness and it is too his/her GLORY that it exists. We are already suffering from overpopulation. When God said be fruitful and multiply, that was when humans were very few in number heehee. You Christians that are so against homosexuality?—In the Old Testament, the law also says to kill women that are not virgins on their wedding night! Why aren’t you preaching THAT?

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:42pm
  23. I mean, let me rephrase that: The old testament says, if a woman does not bleed like a virgin on her wedding night, she should be stoned to death. What happened to Christians preaching THAT? huh? huh?

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:44pm
  24. I know a lot of Americans who accept gay marriage. This guy must be crazy.

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:44pm
  25. What he means to say is, Christianity and most religions will not accept gay marriage because it will disrupt the patriarchal design that these men rely on to have power. Plain and simple.

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:46pm
  26. what violates natural law is how so many stupid people survive and keep breeding !!! who is teaching these idiots ? FAIL

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:48pm
  27. To be American is to be pro civil rights for all races, creeds, religions, genders & sexual prefrences! It is UN American to believe otherwise! Therefore I conclude your remarks to be un American! And perhaps you are as well!

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:49pm
  28. pushing minorities to the back of the line? we ARE a minority and one that has to play catch up with the others. and theres no systematic discrimination and violence against the community? Ha! they clearly have not done any research and spout their nonsense from a position of privilege.

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:50pm
  29. GUESS WHAT…i have had the right to marry for almost a decade now…in Ontario Canada….and guess what….NOTHING HAPPENED…they was no civil unrest, the economy did not collapse…in fact Canada has one of the strongest economies in the world right now…not that there is a connecting…just saying….

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 3:59pm
  30. Where’s this closest case been the past 10 years? A growing number of Americans support gay rights now surpassing 50%. I suspect he’s a closet case and demagogue desperate for donations and pathetically out of touch with reality and human decency and compassion.

  31. So the 400+ species in the natural world that exhibit homosexual behavior are unnatural?

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 4:11pm
  32. Well I do not like Jelly Donuts but sure does not give me the right to inhibit Dunkin Donuts from selling them. If you do not like something just do not do it. Live and Let Live!

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 4:13pm
  33. Haha, oh really now? Where’s your evidence to back up your claim Mr. Perkins? Oh! That’s right! You don’t have any! Thanks for the laugh Tony boy.

  38. I love this whole business about “reason and natural law”… Let me explain, by natural law (biologically, without the MAN-MADE invention of health care), people are supposed to live to be about 40 years old. How ironic is it that all of these people who are products of this man-made, biological intervention are going around telling people that they are unfit to exist because something that they are “violates natural law”. If you can use that tangent of thought to decree homosexuality as an abomination, you can also use that same exact argument and everything that goes along with it to argue for restricting rights of people over the age of 40. But, there’s the problem… most of the people rattling off this bullshit are over the age of 40, so whenever it calls for the oppression of other people, then it’s okay, but as soon as you can use their logic to say something they don’t like (and honestly, there’s nothing bad about being older than 40), it’s completely ridiculous. The idea of marriage itself is a violation of natural law. We as human beings aren’t biologically programmed to mate for life, as is evidenced by the staggering number of people who have committed acts of infidelity (30-60%, as a CONSERVATIVE estimate, statistics say). Religion as an institution calls for people to override their natural, biological impulses all the time (caring about other people and not being selfish or greedy are biologically maladaptive traits — your species doesn’t get very far if they do those things too often), but also condemns people when they “go against” it. Hypocrite? More like “Hippo, quit. Using your religion as a destructive force, that is.”

This last part isn’t so much a point, as it is a general statement. I’m convinced that the religious conservatives invented the “gay agenda” as a scare tactic. Nobody I know wants to turn the world gay or do anything to diminish anyone else’s quality of life. It’s just a little bit backwards that people are out there making religious arguments in favor of secular laws that have nothing to do with them (bans on gay marriage? Really? So tell me how much worse your life is going to be if gay marriages were legalized tomorrow — that would probably be a good Condescending Willy Wonka meme). They’ve been pushing a Christian agenda on people for centuries, and it’s more fucking annoying than anything. Let me just clear up any confusion, for anyone of the religious persuasion: I don’t want to bring down the church, I don’t want to turn anyone gay… I just want to co-exist with you and have you leave me the fuck alone.

  39. I don’t care if he accepts it ever but it must be accepted in the law for equal rights of all people! If he put his energy into helping people instead of hatred, he could get Alot done!

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 5:14pm
  40. I don’t give a flying fuck who accepts the fact I like someone of the same sex or that I want to marry her I know quite a few people who accept it so go to your closet Perkins your opinion doesn’t matter! ;)

  41. I find it interesting that this guy could talk about heterosexual marriage is part of a natural law.. So please explain to me Perkins about couple who can’t produce a child or explain to me about the divorce rate of heterosexuals in this country. Natural order is beyond our capability of understanding just because something aappears to be abnormal or unnatural dosen’t mean it is.I’m tired of all the ignorance & bigotry towards the LGBT community just because they don’t get it.We are all born the way we are LGBT & Straight so enough is enough. That’s my opinion

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 6:32pm
  42. hey Perkins, STFU!

Posted on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 7:05pm
