Let’s hope athletes take a stand in Sochi as they did in Mexico City in 1968
John Carlos took a stand for human rights during the Mexico City Olympics that resonates to this day. Almost 45 years ago, Carlos climbed on the medals podium along with Tommie Smith. Each thrust a black-gloved fist toward the sky. Peter Norman stood in front of them, stoically wearing a badge that showed his support for the African-American cause. Let’s hope the athletes of the world are prepared to make a similar statement at the Sochi Games…

Perhaps it’s because the United States is so divided on the issue of gay rights that, as a country, we are so divided on the Russian anti-gay, Olympic issue. We have states making laws that allow us to marry and states making laws that prevent us from getting married. We have Christians who hate us, and Christians who love us.
