California Sen. Scott Wiener said that he would try again to ban the practice of genital surgery on intersex youth, which can cause physical and emotional distress for life.

Such surgeries occur before young people can consent to them or develop their own gender identity, often scarring them for life and creating medical and identity difficulties later on.

This case could have an effect on whether or not doctors decide to perform surgeries on intersex babies.
