A Wisconsin inmate felt “ecstasy” when killing his cellmate for being Black and gay, according to investigators.
Jackson Vogel, a 24-year-old white man, had been placed in a cell with 19-year-old Micah Laureano on August 27 at the Green Bay Correctional Institute. He told a sheriff’s deputy that he “didn’t like [Laureano]” from the day they met. He killed Laureano because he was “bored,” and Laureano “checked all the boxes” for murdering for being Black and gay, he added, saying that killing people gave him a sense of “ecstasy.”

Vogel was charged with first-degree intentional homicide with hate crime and repeat offender penalty enhancers on top of his current sentence of 40 years in a maximum security prison for killing his mother at age 16.
Laureano was only serving a sentence of two years. Maura McMahon, his attorney, described him as a talented artist and a funny, thoughtful young man.
The alleged murder occurred at 9:30 p.m. local time when a guard making rounds noticed a piece of paper over the men’s cell window. After removing it, he caught a horrific sight of Laureano dangling dead from the top bunk with his arms and legs bound.
Vogel told a separate guard that he had knocked Laureano unconscious before bounding his limbs and strangling him to death.
According to the Associated Press, five other inmates have died in Wisconsin prisons since June of 2023. Two others had killed themselves, one died of a fentanyl overdose, one died of a stroke and another died due to malnutrition and dehydration. All of these deaths occurred at the Waupun Correctional Institution, located about 70 miles north of the cities of Madison and Milwaukee.
The former warden and multiple staff members were charged with negligence following the stroke and malnutrition deaths.
