Gay man thanks VP pick Tim Walz for standing up for him as a a high school student
When he was a 35-year-old social studies teacher and football coach, Walz was the faculty sponsor for his high school’s gay-straight alliance, a group supporting LGBTQ+ students.
Now, 25 years later, a former student of his is thanking him for protecting him when a bully arose — the man’s message is both surprising and heartwarming.
Walz’s support reminds me of some other recent stories of helpful political allies, like the governor who took a stand for trans people, the impressive politician who went viral for his blunt takedown of Christian fanatics, and the out White House official who reflected on the importance of being out in the public eye.
