According to Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance, Democrats hate families.
Pete Buttigieg isn’t having it.

“First of all, let’s be clear, we’re the ones trying to get the Child Tax Credit expanded, and J.D. Vance couldn’t be bothered to show up in the Senate and vote for it, and Republicans have blocked that from being expanded or it would be the law of the land right now,” Buttigieg said. “So if you want to talk about promoting children, promoting family, put your money where your mouth is.”
Vance appeared on the same program and stood his ground regarding his own “pro-family” policies, calling them “thought experiments,” not policy proposals. He said he didn’t regret previous comments he made about people with families deserving more votes for having more kids.
Vance has also said the Democratic Party is run by “childless cat ladies” including Buttigieg and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. When Vance made the comments in 2021 Harris had two stepchildren; Buttigieg later became father to twins with his husband Chasten.
Buttigieg said on CNN that Vance and the Republicans are the ones who’ve proven they’re anti-family while Democrats, including Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, have been promoting pro-family policy like “paid family leave — something that Tim Walz delivered in Minnesota, something that the Biden-Harris administration sought to deliver for the American people.”
“Right now,” Buttigieg added, “Republicans are blocking it, but that’s something that they could certainly change their tune on, but they haven’t.”
Vance claimed he supports the Child Tax Credit and defended himself against criticism that he’s called Dems anti-family. He described those comments as aimed at policy, not individuals, contradicting his “childless cat lady” attack.
Vance also previously characterized Harris and Buttigieg as being “miserable” and taking it out on the American people in his now-infamous 2021 interview with now-former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
Trump’s VP pick says he’s backed more than doubling the child tax credit to $5,000 per family, despite not showing up for a Senate vote on the issue in April.
