Billie Eilish was the only out nominee to take home an Oscar last night

LGBTQ+ Academy Award nominees were few and far between this year, with singer Billie Eilish being the only out performer to take home an Oscar at last night’s star-studded ceremony.

Eilish, who confirmed in an interview with Variety last November that she is “physically attracted to” women, and brother/songwriting partner Finneas O’Connell were up for Best Original Song for their track “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie soundtrack. It was the duo’s second nomination and their second win, following their 2022 win for their song “No Time to Die” from the 2021 James Bond film of the same name. Eilish’s win for “What Was I Made For?” also makes the 22-year-old the youngest person ever to win two Oscars, according to Variety.

Elsewhere in the ceremony, Cillian Murphy, by far the favorite to win Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Oppenheimer, beat out Rustin star Colman Domingo, while Da’Vine Joy Randolph — again, the overwhelming favorite — took home the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role over Nyad’s out Jodie Foster.

More surprising — and arguably something of an upset — Emma Stone won her second Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Poor Things. Stone was nominated alongside Lily Gladstone, widely seen as a frontrunner for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. Had she won, Gladstone, who is of Blackfeet and Nimíipuu heritage and uses she/they pronouns, would have been the first Native American to win for Best Actress.

As far as the awards themselves, Sunday night’s Oscars were without many surprises, with Oppenheimer and Poor Things largely dominating the categories in which they were nominated.

The show wasn’t without its queer-ish moments, though. In his opening monologue, straight host Jimmy Kimmel flirted with straight Barbie star Ryan Gosling. “Let’s go camping together and not tell our wives,” Kimmel joked. And during his highly-anticipated, showstopping performance of “I’m Just Ken,” Gosling got a kiss on the cheek from out Barbie co-star Scott Evans.

But the award for Most Viral Moment has to go to John Cena, who presented the award for Best Costume Design seemingly naked, with a sealed Oscars envelope shielding his private parts. The bit was an homage to Robert Opel, the openly gay streaker who dashed across the Oscars stage as actor David Niven was introducing presenter Elizabeth Taylor during the 1974 ceremony. In his intro, Kimmel noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Opel’s notorious stunt.
