WNBA player Erica Wheeler celebrated her team’s victory last Saturday by proposing to her girlfriend, Danielle Edwards, assistant coach of the Southern Methodist University Mustangs Women’s Basketball team.
A guard for the Indiana Fever, Wheeler was coming off a win against the Dallas Wings when she popped the question surrounded by friends, family, and teammates. The Fever posted a video of the proposal to the team’s official Twitter account, writing, “When you know, you know.”

She said these words in a state that has passed a ban on public drag performance and has outlawed gender-affirming care for minors.
The video depicts Wheeler sharing the same sentiment before directing loved ones to stand in front of her when Edwards arrives. She instructs them to “part the sea” for Edwards, who she also joked is “nosy” and already “suspects something.”

Edwards’s jaw drops when she realizes what’s going on. She says yes as Wheeler’s eye fills with tears and everyone around them cheers. Teammates then tell the camera how happy they are for the couple.
Wheeler also posted a photo of the couple on Instagram and wrote, “My FIANCÉ.”
Edwards wrote a birthday post for Wheeler a few weeks ago that called her “my heart, my best friend, my peace and everything in between. I could write a whole book on how grateful I am for this day because it gave me YOU, but you already know how I am about you.”
