Dolly Parton’s debut “rock” album will be released on November 17. Yesterday she released its whopping 30-long track listing. Rockstar features 21 covers and nine new songs.
It also boasts a wealth of special guests, including several queer legends. This includes Elton John, Linda Perry, Brandi Carlile, Melissa Etheridge, and Rob Halford.

“I’m so excited to finally present my first Rock and Roll album ‘Rockstar’!” Parton said in a statement. “I am very honored and privileged to have worked with some of the greatest iconic singers and musicians of all time and to be able to sing all the iconic songs throughout the album was a joy beyond measure. I hope everybody enjoys the album as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together!”
Unfortunately, there’s no mention of one collaboration many gay fans were dreaming about: Dolly Parton and Cher. Parton had previously said she would have been up for working with the fellow icon.
Instead, another of the collaborations raised some eyebrows.
Why has Parton chosen to release a rock album now? Having built her career as a country singer, Parton was surprised to be nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame last year. She initially said she wished to decline and for her nomination to go to an actual rock star. However, the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame people disagreed. They now induct people from a wide range of genres. Parton was duly awarded the honor last November and said she had perhaps better release a rock album.
Following the release yesterday of the album artwork and tracklisting, Parton today issued the first song from Rockstar. Check out “World On Fire” below.
Parton is, or rather was, one of seventeen artists up for consideration this year in the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame.

The three people who stand out as not “iconic,” influential, nor relevant are Kevin Cronin, Miley Cyrus, and Kid Rock. Kevin Cronin wrote the song she’s covering, and while I wouldn’t say Cronin’s band is iconic, the song certainly is. Miley Cyrus is of course her god-daughter.
But the Kid Rock song doesn’t make sense. I googled if it’s a song Kid Rock wrote… Doesn’t seem like it. I’m not even sure what the song is. It really does seem like an odd collaboration. Are they old friends or something? I mean if Ellen can be friends with George Bush…
There’s no getting around the fact that Kid Rock is a jerk, but before people start crapping on Dolly, they might want to consider how much credibility they want to sacrifice on that. Dolly Parton is one of the very rare people that everyone loves, and part of that is because she’s incredibly skilled at rising above the noise. When people reach a point where they think a single song collaboration negates decades of that woman’s prolific work on behalf of everyone, boundless love and joy given to the world, lifting up our community, as well as many, many others, they’ve really lost site of what a divine presence walking among us looks like. Dolly Parton is probably the closest thing to an American saint that our country will ever see, and she does it with an uncommon dose of humility to boot! Truly an inspiration to us all!

And YOU can’t have it ALL your way. One questionable choice out of 30 songs is still a good percentage in my book. Nobody here praising her good choices of who she’s singing with. Her cup is way more than half full, so I think we should be proud of that. Personally, I didn’t find anything wrong with her voice, but I’ve always loved her and her voice.
