Chasten Buttigieg sharply condemned Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) after her tone-deaf statements about the Colorado Springs, Colorado LGBTQ bar shooting that left five people dead and 18 injured. The shooting occurred the night before the club was set to host a drag brunch.
“The news out of Colorado Springs is absolutely awful,” she wrote. “This morning the victims & their families are in my prayers. This lawless violence needs to end and end quickly.”
Boebert has spent her first term in Congress attacking LGBTQ people and portraying them as a danger to children. Meanwhile, she has opposed all gun control legislation and even rose to fame off the gun-themed restaurant she owned where the waiters carried guns.
Buttigieg, whose husband is out Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, wasn’t having it.

“You encourage this type of hatred,” he responded. “Get off Twitter and start looking inward.”

In a separate tweet, Buttigieg explained his position more: “Republicans continue to run on and spread anti-LGBTQ ideology and hatred while refusing to lift a finger on gun violence. This is preventable, but only if they start seeing LGBTQ people as equals, and themselves as leaders.”

Pete Buttigieg condemned the attack.
“The violent news from Colorado Springs is sickening and heartbreaking – the more so because there is a pattern,” he wrote. “We can not, will not, allow hate to win. We must end this in our time. No rest until all of us, including all of us in the LGBTQ+ community, can be, and feel, safe.”
The Buttigieges have been the targets of Boebert’s anti-LGBTQ ire in the past. Last year, she attacked Pete Buttigieg for taking paternity leave after adopting two kids.
“The guy was not working! Because why? He was trying to figure out how to chestfeed,” she said, taking a jab at the fact that the Buttigieges are a gay couple. “Maybe someone should tell him, please, so he can get back to work.”
Boebert won reelection in a close race and will serve for another term in Congress.
