A 35-year-old Black transgender woman named Regina Allen was shot to death in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Now police are seeking 31-year-old Clayton Hubbird as the lead suspect in her murder.
August 29 video footage from a British Petroleum (BP) gas station showed that Allen and Hubbird briefly talked inside the station before she stepped into the passenger’s seat of his black Chevy Tahoe SUV, police told WITI. When the two arrived at Allen’s apartment complex, a witness told police that he saw them arguing in the vehicle before hearing a gunshot.
Allen reportedly stumbled out of the vehicle and exclaimed, “I’m shot!” before dialing 911 for emergency services. When police arrived, she told an officer that she had met the man who shot her at a gas station. She later died from her injuries, barely a month before her 36th birthday.
On August 30, police found the SUV parked in Wauwatosa, a city about seven miles east of Milwaukee. Investigators found ammunition and firearm magazines in Hubbird’s bedroom. Police say they plan on charging Hubbird with reckless homicide. He has not yet been apprehended as of Friday morning.
Allen is believed to be the 28th trans person murdered this year, according to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). A majority of the individuals murdered this year have been Black trans women. The number is likely an undercount seeing as some trans people are misgendered by their families, police, or media after death while others are never identified at all.
Barely a week before Allen’s murder, 33-year-old Black trans woman Dede Ricks was also shot to death in Detroit, Michigan. A 31-year-old man named Deontae Close was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with her killing.
A 28-year-old Black trans woman named Hayden Davis was also shot to death in Detroit in late July. No suspect has been named in her murder.
According to the 2017-2022 Transgender Homicide Tracker, 73 percent of all confirmed homicides against Black trans women have involved a gun. Two-thirds of trans and gender non-conforming murder victims were killed by an acquaintance, friend, family member, or intimate partner.
