Dolly Parton, the beloved country music star and LGBTQ ally, is going to appear in Mexican Pizza: The Musical, a satirical musical recounting the “harrowing” story of Taco Bell lovers who fought to get the Mexican Pizza back on the fast-food restaurant’s menu.

The musical won’t appear on Broadway; it’ll appear on May 26 at 8 p.m. EST on the TikTok video-sharing platform. Parton will perform alongside pop star Doja Cat and queer TikTok creator Victor Kunda.

Parton revealed her involvement in the musical in a May 9 Instagram post in which she showed the musical’s script. The script’s cover said, “Based on the true story of the internet losing its mind.”

Parton first revealed her love of Mexican pizza in a February 2022 interview with Business Insider.

“I like soft-shell tacos,” Parton said. “I like the others, but they fall apart so bad, especially if you’re riding around,” hinting at how, as a musician, she spends a lot of time on the road. “So I always get a Taco Supreme, with the sour cream and all that, in the soft shell. I love that. And I get an order of rice and beans. And I get mild sauce. I don’t like to get it too hot and ruin everything.”

She then added, “They used to make a little — I think they still do it; one of the restaurants — they make a little Mexican pizza, which is also good. I love that.”

Sadly, even though Mexican Pizza has been on Taco Bell’s menu since 1985, the restaurant removed the menu item in 2020 in order to make space for other menu items and to reduce waste from the product’s packaging. Its removal caused a fan outcry on the internet, including by Doja Cat.

When the fast-food chain used one of Doja Cat’s songs in a commercial, she tweeted, “So where’s my Mexican Pizza?”

On March 8, Doja Cat posted a TikTok video of a song called “Refried Beans (Mexican Pizza).”

In the video, she said, “I made a song about Mexican Pizza because I love it so much,” Doja Cat said in the video. “I wish that Taco Bell didn’t discontinue it a year ago, and this led me to this monstrosity of a beat that I just laid… and if you don’t like it, I understand.”

Then in April of this year, Doja Cat announced the item’s return to the Taco Bell menu during her performance at the Coachella Music Festival. The item was returned to the menu this month.

The actual “pizza” is made from two crispy tortillas with ground beef and refried beans inside, and topped with tomatoes and melted cheese.

The musical will also feature queer TikToker Victor Kunda. In early March, Kunda posted a video of himself pretending to choreograph “Mexican Pizza: The Musical” and asking dancers to put “less stank” on some of their dance moves.
