Could Marjorie Taylor Greene be blocked from reelection because she’s an insurrectionist?

Anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theorist and U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has become the subject of a lawsuit accusing her of being an insurrectionist in connection with the January 6th attack on the Capitol.

The14th amendment of the Constitution bans insurrectionists from holding public office, so if Greene loses, she would not be able to run for office again.

The lawsuit has been brought by a nonprofit called Free Speech For People and argues that due to her role in inciting the Capitol insurrection, Greene “is constitutionally disqualified from congressional office and, as such, ineligible to run as a candidate under state and federal law,” according to the New Yorker.

The lawsuit shares multiple moments to prove Greene played a role in the insurrection, one of which was a tweet on January 5th calling the 6th “our 1776 moment.” There was also a Facebook video of Greene declaring, “You can’t allow it to just transfer power peacefully like Joe Biden wants and allow him to become our President because he didn’t win this election.”

Ron Fein, the legal director of Free Speech For the People, said it’s likely Greene will appeal all the way up to the Georgia Supreme Court, but that he believes they have a strong case.

Greene is known for her belief in the long-debunked QAnon conspiracy theories claiming that the government was really in the control of a “deep state” cabal of pedophiles in opposition to Donald Trump, and “Q” is someone on the inside that needed help in bringing the “deep state” down.

Some other “theories” and beliefs that Greene has peddled on social media include those mass shootings such as the Parkland and Newtown massacres were “false flag” events, denial that the 9/11 terror attacks took place, that Black people “are held slaves to the Democratic Party,” that “space lasers” controlled by a Jews were the cause of many wildfires, and the QAnon precursor, Pizzagate.

Last February, she was also stripped of her committee assignments in Congress due to her conspiracy theories and support of violence against Democrats.

Greene is also virulently anti-trans and has said that fighting for transgender equality is “exactly” the same as what the Taliban is doing in Afghanistan.
