Despite all the trials and tribulations the public image of Ellen DeGeneres has gone through in recent years, she still musters the bravery to go in front of a camera and bear all for the public.

At least this time though, she’s not the sole subject of the sit down. The comedienne and host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show appears with her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, to discuss their relationship for People Magazine’s recent “The Love Issue.”

Ellen jokingly talks about Portia being “my first wife…and only, so far.”

Despite rumors about the pair over the years, they describe their relationship as strong as ever. The couple, who have been together for 16 years and married for over 12, talk about how they first met, three years prior to their first time dating.

“At the time, I was closeted,” Portia recalls about meeting Ellen, who had already publicly came out by that time. “I really wasn’t comfortable about my sexuality, and she was obviously very open about hers…”

Portia then developed a years-long crush on Ellen, until she finally mustered the support to ask her out when they ran into each other at a photo studio. Portia needed the “moral support” of Jeffrey Tambor to approach her, she explains.

Ellen says, “it was pretty apparent… I know it’s corny to say, but this is my soul mate.”

They also describes the sweet things they do to keep their marriage going. Portia gushes about Ellen having “the hotel put rose petals in the shape of a love heart on my bed… every single time over the last 16 years. And it always catches me off-guard.”

Off-camera, though, Ellen hinted to People about the allegations of the toxic work placer her and her staff fostered at The Ellen DeGeneres Show for a moment.

“It broke my heart; I couldn’t have gone through everything I went through without her,” she said. “It was a horrible time in my life, and she was a rock. She kept me going and tried to help me put things in perspective.”
