Video has been circulating on social media of a bizarre event hosted by Donald Trump’s daughter Tiffany for a group called Trump Pride this past Saturday.

“It’s such an honor to be able to be here and speak truthfully, honestly from my heart what I know my father believes in,” she said in her speech. “Prior to politics, he supported gays, lesbians, LGBQIA+ [sic] community. OK?”

She said it “saddens” her that people “unfortunately” read “fabricated lies” on social media about her father’s repeated attacks on LGBTQ equality.

“How would you support your father?” Tiffany Trump said unnamed friends ask her. “We know you. We know your best friends are gay. We know your best friends are this, this, this.”

“I say, ‘It’s because my father has always supported all of you.’ OK?”

In Tiffany Trump’s prepared comments, she repeatedly referred to gay and lesbian people – without mentioning transgender people – and even dropped the “T” from the initialism, which perhaps makes sense considering that letter represents the part of the LGBTQ population that her father has attacked with the most vigor, including rolling back protections for transgender people in schools and homeless shelters and banning transgender people from the military.

The event was organized by Trump Pride, a group whose website says that it is “a diverse coalition dedicated to re-electing President Trump, the first President to begin his presidency in support of marriage equality.”

Donald Trump has long said that he opposes marriage equality and has never said that he supports it. He even went so far as to say that Evangelical Christians “can trust me on traditional marriage” during his 2016 campaign.

His current Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, signed a statement opposing marriage equality in the past and has worked for the anti-LGBTQ hate group Alliance Defending Freedom.

Trump Pride’s “diverse coalition” is led by a six-person advisory board, all of whose members are white and all but one are men. The group includes former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell – who currently works for an anti-LGBTQ conservative Christian organization – the Log Cabin Republicans’ Charles Moran, and real estate investor Jill Homan.
