The legendary performer Cher tried to volunteer at a post office but was unceremoniously turned away.

Troubled by news that Donald Trump has withheld funding to the U.S. Postal Service in order to stop universal mail-in voting – a measure several states are considering for the general election this fall in the face of the coronavirus pandemic – Cher asked on Twitter yesterday if people can just volunteer at the post office.

She wasn’t kidding.

“NO,IM NO KIDDING,” the Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy-winning singer and actor wrote in all-caps to make sure people understood that she was serious about volunteering at a post office.

She then became exasperated that no one was willing to help her volunteer to sort and deliver mail for free.

Her Twitter followers were left hanging yesterday. “What am I supposed to do?” one follower asked. “Sit around and wait for you?”

Well, they can’t do that. Cher said that she called two post offices near where she lives in Malibu today and found out that you can’t just volunteer to work at a post office.

“Hi This Is Cher,& I Would like to know If you ever take Volunteers!?” she said when she called the post office.

The person she talked with gave her the number of a supervisor.

“Hi This is Cher Do U Accept volunteers,” she asked, this time talking to a supervisor.

“NO,Need Fingerprints & Background Check,” the supervisor allegedly responded.

Cher has long been an ally to LGBTQ people. In the 1970s, she brought the art of drag into the mainstream, hiring two drag performers for her show at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

In the 80s, she brought a lesbian character to life in the Oscar-nominated film Silkwood. And she has been supportive of her son Chaz Bono, who transitioned in the late 2000s.
