On the same day that President Donald Trump deployed federal troops to tear gas peaceful protestors outside the White House, his daughter Ivanka tweeted a tone-deaf message to celebrate Pride month.

“Less hate, more love!” she tweeted with a string of rainbow hearts to celebrate the start of Pride Month. Responses to the tweet from the LGBTQ community and celebrities ranged from outrage to disgust.

“Your father is systematically rolling back our rights. You don’t care about us, and you never did,” Charlotte Clymer, the former press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign and a popular transgender influencer, replied.

Chasten Buttigieg, husband of former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, replied with two photos. One was a picture of the White House lit up in Pride colors during former President Barack Obama’s administration. The other showed the White House completely dark as Trump hid in an underground bunker and protesters clashed with the Secret Service along the perimeter.

Even PFLAG, the usually non-controversial support group for parents and friends of LGBTQ people, shot back an angry reply.

“Take our #LGBTQ+ loved ones’ names—and our fight for justice and equality—out of your mouth,” the group’s account tweeted.

Last night, Trump invoked the rarely used Insurrection Act to give himself the ability to use the military inside the borders of the United States, claiming state governors were unable to keep control. As Trump was speaking to reporters in the White House Rose Garden, the sounds of officers firing tear gas canisters and rubber bullets at peaceful protesters outside the gates.

Trump took no questions, but as agents cleared the area, he strolled outside the White House perimeter and across a nearby park to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Every president since James Madison has attended services at “the President’s Church.” It was damaged on Sunday night during rioting over racial injustice and police brutality.

Trump waved a Bible around as he posed outside. Asked if it was his personal Bible, Trump curtly replied, “It’s a Bible.”

Mariann Budde, the Episcopal Bishop who oversees the church, denounced the President’s stunt.

“I am outraged. I am the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and was not given even a courtesy call, that they would be clearing [the area] with tear gas so they could use one of our churches as a prop,” Budde told the Washington Post. “Everything he has said and done is to inflame violence. We need moral leadership, and he’s done everything to divide us.”

“Holding a bible, one that declares that God is love… when everything he has said and done is to enflame violence. I am beyond… We need moral leadership and he’s done everything to divide us and has just used one of the most sacred symbols of the Judeo-Christian tradition.”
