Last week Sen. Cory Booker grilled Secretary of State nominee Mike Pompeo about his past views on LGBT rights. This week, the conservative Christian organization Liberty Counsel is calling for Booker’s resignation.

“Is being gay a perversion?” Booker demanded of Pompeo during his confirmation hearing to become Secretary of State. Pompeo hemmed and hawed that his “respect for every individual… is the same.” But Sen. Booker wouldn’t let him off the hook.

Now the Liberty Counsel has issued a press release entitled “Sen. Booker Hates Christians” calling on Booker to “apologize or resign” for “interrogating” Pompeo on his religious beliefs about marriage.

Apparently, Booker’s biggest crime was “accidentally” naming the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a resource. In the Liberty Counsel’s alternate universe the SPLC is to blame for two attempted mass shootings and is closer to a hate group than the organizations it tracks.

The Liberty Counsel blames SPLC for the attempted mass shooting at the offices of the Family Research Council (FRC) and the shooting of Rep. Steven Scalise. The Counsel claims the SPLC caused the shootings by labeling the Family Research Council a hate group and Scalise as a white supremacist.

Here’s the thing. The FRC earned its spot on the SPLC’s hate group list because of its defaming of gays and lesbians. Steven Scalise once proudly referred to himself as “David Duke without the baggage.” So identifying him as a white supremacist isn’t exactly a mistake.

The Liberty Counsel calls it the “height of hypocrisy” for Sen. Booker to call Mike Pompeo out on his own words, and hold him accountable for what he said. The real height of hypocrisy is the Liberty Counsel calling for Booker to apologize for exposing the truth about Mike Pompeo’s beliefs and raising legitimate questions about how they will affect his performance as Secretary of state.
