Virginia’s new transgender legislator destroyed her anti-trans opponent on national TV

Danica Roem won her election last night to become the first openly transgender state legislator in American history and the victory was especially sweet since her opponent was the most anti-LGBTQ politicians in the state. In fact, he dubbed himself “Virginia’s homophobe in chief.”

During his ruthless campaign, Bob Marshall was aggressively transphobic, including refusing to debate Roem and consistently referring to her with the wrong pronoun. He was the sponsor of Virginia’s bathroom bill that would have discriminated against transgender people.

While Roem ran a consistently positive campaign focused on the issues, Marshall primarily attacked her for her gender identity, including calling into a hate group’s radio show on Election Day. Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association praised Marshall for “standing in the way” of progressives’ “deviant agenda” to have transgender people run for public office.

So when Roem appeared on MSNBC with Lawrence O’Donnell, the interviewer gave Roem the chance to snap back at Marshall for his scorched earth campaign.

Once again, Roem took the high road – and completely and utterly destroyed Marshall in the process.

Boom. Zing!
